Booklet for farmers

PUDUKOTTAI: The Village Resource Centre (VRC) of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation at Annavasal in the district has brought out a booklet on agriculture-related data for the benefit of farmers.

The data include the demographic profile of each and every farmer, details about his landholding, the nature of soil, the cropping pattern, the irrigational facility and the application of fertilizer and pesticide. The data has been compiled by the foundation’s Village Knowledge Centres functioning in 13 villages in and around Annavasal.

Realising the booklet at a function held here recently to mark the one-day training programme on ‘Capacity-building for knowledge workers and boundary partners’ here, R. Anbalagan, boundary partner of the Village Knowledge Centre, Vamban, said all the details of the farmers had been computerised.

Receiving the first copy, Project Co-ordinator R. Rajkumar said 480 farmers had registered their data with the Village Knowledge Centres. The centres offered services including dissemination of information about the cropping pattern, climatic condition and marketing strategy. Information would be periodically communicated through Short Message Service to the farmers.

A monthly meeting would also be held to upgrade the skills of the farmers.He appealed to the knowledge workers and boundary partners to explain to the farmers the services available at the centres.

G. Dhanapathy and P. Thangasamy, office-bearers of the District Tree Growers Association, and Director of Tamil Nadu Scientific Research Organisation Vijikumar spoke.
