Corrections and clarifications

* * An ocean near Delhi? An item in “Snapshots”, “[Tirupati-bound] AI [Air India] flight makes emergency landing” (November 1, 2008, page 1), incorrectly showed the picture of an Air Europa aircraft. As pointed out by a few readers, the AP photograph related to the incident of an Air Europa aircraft skidding off the runway on landing, in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain, on October 31, 2008. The aircraft, flight UX 196 from Glasgow, stopped short of the ocean by a few metres — as seen in the picture.

* * The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Rousing welcome to Guru Granth Sahib” (October 31, 2008) said it showed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh exchanging pleasantries with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal [third from left]. A few readers said it was not the Punjab Chief Minister but the Tamil Nadu Governor Mr. Surjeet Singh Barnala. As another reader points out, it is not the Punjab CM, but Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Avtar Singh Makkar.

* * The first paragraph of a report “India to make fresh proposals on Iran pipeline” (October 31, 2008) was “Falling oil prices and the successful conclusion of the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement have come together to produce a renewed Indian interest in the $7.4 million natural gas pipeline from Iran.” It should have been “$7.4 billion”.

* * A report “India Cements turnover improves 21 % in H1” (“Business” page, November 1, 2008) made a reference, in the first paragraph, to Mr. V. Srinivasan being the Chairman and Managing Director of the company. It should have been Mr. N. Srinivasan, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director.
