Alleges repeated failures of the State Home Department to tackle terrorist links

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson M.M. Hassan on Monday demanded a probe by the Union Home Ministry into the recent terrorist links traced to the State.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Hassan said the Central probe had become necessary in view of the repeated failures of the State Home Department to effectively tackle not only terrorist links but even mundane law and order issues.

He criticised Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty, who is holding additional charge of the Home portfolio, for his attempts to trivialise the recent expose about Kerala’s terrorist links.

Divergent views

He alleged that the Chief Minister and Mr. Mohammed Kutty had different views about the entire issue.

Mr. Hassan urged the State government to convene a high-level conference of political parties and social, youth and students’ organisations to chart out measures to root out the terror threat.

He urged social leaders and religious scholars to take the initiative to make an assessment of the current situation in which youths in large numbers were showing an affinity towards terrorist activities.

He blamed the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for the birth and growth of terrorist outfits in the State, primarily contributed by the political terror it had spread in Kannur.

“Incidentally, Kannur happens to be the fertile ground for the growth of majority and minority communal groups,” he said.

Suspension sought

He wanted the State government to suspend the police officers who had attended a meeting at the Kottayam district office of the CPI(M). He suspected that the meeting, attended by policemen owing allegiance to the Pinarayi group in the CPI(M), had been convened either to meddle in the coming Lok Sabha elections or to work out a scheme to put down supporters of the Chief Minister.
