Warm reception for Sayantan Das

KOLKATA: The recently crowned world youth under-12 chess champion Sayantan Das feels the title will help him in realising a career as a professional chess player. Becoming the first player from the state to win gold in a world meet, Sayantan was given a grand felicitation by Goodricke National Chess Academy, where he is a student, on his arrival here on Sunday.

The 11-year-old champion was hailed for his performance in the World Youth Chess Championship in Vietnam, where he scored 9.5 points out of a possible 11.

“He came through a tough field full of Russian players, who are very good at the game,” said Sayantan’s mother Panchali Das.

Indian won as many as eight medals with four of them being gold in the different age group categories in the championship held at the Vietnamese city of Vung Tau.

Coached by IM Saptarshi Das, Sayantan expressed his wish to prepare himself more for the extremely competitive world of professional chess. The little champion hopes to carry his form into the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany, where he will represent India. — Principal Correspondent
