Avoid project delays, VS tells Collectors

Special Correspondent

The Chief Minister tells officials to take remedial measures.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Monday criticised delays in the implementation of various development and welfare programmes.

The Chief Minister told a two-day annual conference of Collectors that they should view the matter seriously and take remedial steps.

Mr. Achuthanandan said various development programmes got stalled on account of delays in land acquisition. This led to cost escalation and heavy liabilities for the government. This should be avoided. At the same time, proper rehabilitation of evictees should be ensured.

He directed the Collectors to complete the resumption of encroached government lands and their distribution to the landless in two years. All farmers eligible to receive titles should be granted titles within six months.

He called upon them to make a success of the food security programme with the cooperation of local self-government institutions, cooperatives and the public. The district-level set-up for reviewing the progress of works undertaken using the local funds of members of the Assembly and Parliament should be strengthened.

Attention should be paid to timely implementation of housing schemes for the poor, disbursement of old-age and welfare pensions. Strong measures should be taken to check hoarding and black marketing. Special efforts should be made to achieve targets in revenue realisation.
