Government asked to ensure uninterrupted power supply

KRISHNAGIRI: Kongu Vellalar Peravai warned the government that they will resort to a State-wide agitation if the government failed to improve the power situation in the State.

About 200 members, including 50 women, of the Peravai staged a demonstration near the Krishnagiri District Collectorate on Monday.

The industries are finding it very difficult to run their units because of the unannounced power cut and restriction on usage of power during peak hours. The members raised slogans asking the government to improve the power situation.

They asked the government to take effective steps to make available enough fertilizers in all parts of the State. The Peravai State vice-president, A. Durarai Thervendan, M. Rajamani, State Trade Union leader among others participated. Later, the leaders submitted a memorandum to Collector V.K. Shanmugam.In Salem and Namakkal too the Peravai staged demonstrations.

The unannounced power cuts had affected all sections of society. The industrial establishments were struggling to operate due to drastic fall in the productivity. A large number of employees were on the verge of losing their jobs due to frequent power cuts. The issue had put the common man to untold hardships.

Members also wanted the Government to ensure adequate supply of fertilizer to the farmers. The fertilizer shortage, if continued, would affect the agricultural productivity, they said. They demanded the Government to fix Rs. 2,000 as the price per tonne of sugarcane.

The Peravai urged the Central Government to initiate measures to protect the Sri Lankan Tamils caught in the battle between Sri Lankan military and the LTTE. The Government should provide necessary assistance to the innocent Tamils in the island nation. In Salem, members took out a procession in support of their demands.

In Namakkal town, members staged a demonstration in front of the Revenue Divisional office and submitted a petition to the Collector.
