‘Small industries only alternative’

Correspondent

Karwar: Small-scale and home-based industries are the only alternative available for youth looking for jobs as large industries are suffering losses, said Education Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri.

He was addressing a seminar on “Management of small-scale industries” at the Dr. A. V. Baliga College of commerce at Kumta. Small-scale industries have emerged as the backbone of financial management in the country. Fisheries, honey, mango and watermelon canning have good scope in the district, he said.

Small-scale industries are labour-oriented. So job opportunity is high and the Government is encouraging small-scale industries, he said.

Keeping this in mind, the Government is developing the Tumkur-Honnavar Highway and railway lines in the district, he said. The district has no medical college, he lamented.

He said the Government will make efforts to set up a medical college in the district. Talks were on with the Forest Department for obtaining land for the college, the Minister added.

S.V. Pikle, president of Canara College Society, spoke. L.V. Shanbhag, Muralidhar Prabhu and S.V. Shenvi were present.
