Streamlining of panchayati raj system in the offing
Government not to hike milk prices: Minister

Bangalore: The Government will launch a comprehensive programme for streamlining the administrative machinery of the Panchayati Raj system in the overall interest of rural development in the State, the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje has said.

Welcome

She was speaking at a function organised to welcome 12 members of the Nanjangud taluk panchayat, who had deserted the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), here on Monday.

Emphasising the importance of decentralisation in administration, she said that there was a dire need to strengthen the three-tier Panchayati Raj system for strengthening and developing democracy.

Keen

Many panchayat members — village, taluk and zilla — across the State were keen on joining the Bharatiya Janata Party as they believed in the objectives of the party and the leadership of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddurappa. The party would welcome all those who wished to join the party voluntarily, in compliance with the party principles and discipline, she added.

Those who joined the BJP by deserting the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) are: P. Mahesh, Tammanne Gowda, H.S. Suresh, Basavarajappa, Ravish Kumar, Prakash, Shivamurthy, Devanna, Annaiah Shetty, Rathnamma, Latha and Vijaya.

Milk price

The Minister for Cooperation Lakshman S. Savadi said that the Government would not hike milk prices as the demand was politically motivated.

Talks

The Government had convened a meeting to discuss the issue.

However, it would hold another round of talks with the former Minister and the Chairman of the Karnataka Milk Federation H.D. Revanna on the issue, he said.

Many senior leaders of the party, including the spokesperson and former MP Dhananjaya Kumar, were present on the occasion.
