‘BJP Government abetting land grab’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (Secular) party leaders on Monday alleged that the BJP government was trying to help some companies grab land in and around Bangalore.

Making this allegation at a joint press conference, former Minister Cheluvarayaswamy and MLA of Magadi C. Balakrishna said that the Yeddyurappa Government had allegedly finalised the “deal” with a private company to lease 35 acres belonging to the Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) for Rs. 700 crore, for a period of 30 years. The Government was trying to shift the KSDL to Dabaspet, they said.

In another move, the Government was planning to sell another 10 acres at Chennenahally in Magadi taluk to an organisation — Janaseva Vidya Kendra run by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — at a throw-away price, alleged Mr. Balakrishna. He said the Janata Dal (S) was investigating the various moves of the Government in this regard. The land identified for the kendra was originally earmarked for distribution among the beneficiaries of the Ashraya scheme, Mr. Balakrishna added. Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said there was no record of any Government getting back the land given on a long-term lease, even after the expiry of the lease period. He felt that the land belonging to the KSDL was going to face the same eventuality.
