Transgenders may get free education

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has come forward to offer free education and job training to bring about academic and economic inclusion of transgenders.

The University will offer free education to transgenders through its Centre for Distance Education. Likewise, skill training and job placement would be undertaken through the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development, the Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko announced recently, at the inaugural of a day-long State-level seminar on ‘Transgender – Issues and Concerns for Social Workers’, organised by the University’s Department of Social Work.

As in the case of disabled persons, who are gifted with unique abilities, the transgenders also have the potential to create a positive social impact provided they are given educational opportunities, Prof. Ponnavaikko said.

The Department organised the seminar with the purpose of finding answers to crucial questions pertaining to the gender categorisation of transgenders, the society’s readiness to accept them as equals, and the psycho-social issues surrounding transgenders, said P. Ilango, Professor and Head of the Department.

The University’s Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy is to make a detailed analysis of the methodologies for their social inclusion, the Director of the Centre K. Raja Mohan Rao added.

S. Srinivasan, Project Officer, Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation, Tiruchi, informed that 135 transgenders in the district have so far been enrolled as members of the exclusive Welfare Board.

Three self-help-groups of transgenders have been formed under the aegis of Mahalir Thittam, he said, informing that the Government was seriously considering the idea of extending to transgenders the benefit of all women-oriented schemes.
