Move to check vandalism in historical places

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The district administration is planning to rope in student volunteers to create awareness against vandalism in places of historical importance.

“Bringing in children to educate adults on the need to maintain our monuments is being considered,” Collector S.S. Jawahar told journalists here on Monday.

He was inspecting the renovation work at King Tirumalai Nayak Palace, popularly known as Mahal, along with M. Rajaram, Tourism Commissioner and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) and K. Arulmozhi, Archaeology Commissioner.

Mr. Jawahar said that the work at Mahal was split into three contracts. Archaeology Department, Public Works Department and experts were ensuring that the development work conformed to the norms laid down by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Mr. Rajaram said that inspection was undertaken to consider sanctioning extra funds for additional works, which were not covered originally. Also the speed and quality of work were being monitored.Despite the ongoing renovation work, visitors to the Mahal, both domestic and foreign, had shot up by 20 per cent.

Apart from these funds, Mr. Arulmozhi said that the Finance Commission had given a grant of Rs 3 crore towards renovation work at Mahal.
