Parties give due representation to women

Raipur: At least 10 women candidates from each of the three main political parties-- BJP, BSP and the Congress--will be in the electoral fray during the Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh.

While the BJP and the BSP, who are contesting all the 90 seats, have given tickets to 10 women each, the Congress has given tickets to 10 women from a total 87 seats it is contesting.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) that is contesting from seven seats has not given tickets to women contestants. The BJP, which has reserved 33 per cent party organisational posts for women and increased the reservation of seats to 50 per cent from the existing 33.3 per cent for women in local-body elections in Chhattisgarh, did not follow the same criteria when it came to the ticket distribution in the assembly pollsDuring the last elections, the party had given six tickets to women candidates, out of which four won the elections.

“The party has not fixed any reservation for women in this election as winnability is the only criteria,” state BJP general secretary and spokesperson Dharamlal Kaushik said.
