When positive draws negative reactions

BANGALORE: “Spoorthi Jagruthi,” a mass campaign against stigma and discrimination towards HIV-positive sex workers, is being organised in the city.
The programme comprises a “motorcycle jatha” on November 5 from K.C. General Hospital to Bowring Hospital; formation of human chain on November 11 at Corporation Circle and from Koramangala Forum Mall to Dairy Circle, and a signature campaign on November 24 at Town Hall.
Shobha Ratna, coordinator of Swathi Mahila Sangha, told presspersons here on Monday that women sex workers, in particular HIV-affected, faced stigma and discrimination in society. In many cases they were denied even medical treatment. This attitude made sex workers hide the disease, thereby multiplying the problem, she said.
Ms. Ratna said that the sangha in association with other organisations had organised “Baduku” programme, to help sex workers fight against stigma and discrimination. The programme would focus on advocacy with police, anti-social elements, lawyers, pimps and doctors.
