Workers’ forum alleges cover-up in building collapse

BANGALORE: The Construction Workers’ Welfare Action Committee, which alleges that there has been a cover up attempt in the recent collapse of Prestige-Shantiniketan building at Whitefield, has sought an inquiry into the incident by a retired judge.

Hasan Mansoor, president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties-Karnataka, told presspersons here on Monday that there was a possibility that there had been deaths in the incident on Hoodi Road, but nothing had come out in the open. “The recent incident creates suspicion in the minds of public that there has been an attempt to cover up the issue. The Government should probe the incident and action should be taken against the officials concerned,” he said.

M. Venkataswamy of Samata Sainik Dal said there was no authentic figure of the dead and injured. The hospital where the injured were taken for treatment belonged to a relative of one of the owners of the construction company, which facilitated hushing up of many things, he alleged. The death of the watchman, who was the witness of the incident, is also “mysterious,” he said.

Convenor of the Committee Aditya demanded compensation to the victims of the incident. “The officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) who failed to inspect the quality of construction should be punished and an investigation be taken up on the mysterious death of the watchman,” Mr. Aditya demanded.
