Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s call to industry to avoid knee-jerk reactions (Nov. 4) when the spectre of layoffs looms large in the face of the economic slowdown is timely. It is heartening to note that the government is taking proactive measures to sustain the growth momentum. One hopes the present crisis, the ripple effect in a global economy, is short term. K.S. Thampi, Chennai The Prime Minister has rightly reminded the captains of industry their societal obligations while coping with the effects of the global financial crisis. Indians are fortunate that despite the economy being affected by the global meltdown, the common man is not the victim as in the U.S. There is no shortage of essential commodities despite the high rate of inflation, which is gradually declining. Fortunately, the country has received good rainfall this year. Let us, therefore, not get disheartened. J.P. Reddy, Nalgonda In the wake of global recession, the IT majors in India are resorting to ruthless retrenchment. Such a move will create a fear psychosis among the young.
