Victorious: Thiruvananthapuram women’s cricket team, which won the State senior women’s cricket championship. KOZHIKODE: Fine bowling, especially by the seamers, helped Thiruvananthapuram retain the State senior women’s cricket championship. The capital beat Kozhikode by five wickets at the Corporation Stadium here on Tuesday. The host, electing to bat after skipper E. Rensy won the toss, was bowled out for 93 in 41. overs, struggling against the pace trio of T.P. Soniamol (one for 31), skipper R.S. Saranya (one for 15) and T. Shobhana (two for seven). With leg-spinner S. Asha (two for 12) also coming good, Kozhikode could never recover from a shaky start. Its hopes of a decent total rested on Rensy, but when she fell to off-spinner P. Rakhi for 17, the team slumped to 56 for four and into deep trouble. K.K. Bavitha, who came in at No. 7, was the topscorer with 20. Chasing a modest target, Thiruvananthapuram overcame some anxious moments early on before romping home in the 39th over. The reigning champion was in a sport of bother at 28 for four, but a fifth wicket stand of 45 by Saranya (34) and P.S. Ameena (14 not out) steadied the ship. Off-spinner P.T. Prajula was the pick of the Kozhikode bowlers, with figures of three for 30. Malappuram beat Kollam by six wickets at the Medical College Ground to clinch the third place. The scores: Kozhikode 93 in 41.4 overs lost to Thiruvananthapuram 94 for five in 38.1 overs (R.S. Saranya 34, P.T. Prajula three for 30). Kollam 43 in 27.4 overs (Sini Jose three for 10) lost to Malappuram 44 for four in 18.1 overs (Jiny four for 22).
