VISAKHAPATNAM: Former Rajya Sabha member ‘Padmasri’ Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad has called for fully utilising the advantages of the classical language status conferred on Telugu for the development of the language. Talking to the media persons here on Wednesday, he thanked Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, chairman of Official Language Commission A.B.K. Prasad and all others for achieving the classical language status for Telugu, which he described as ‘next only to the formation of independent Andhra Pradesh State’. Yarlagadda said that a Telugu Mahapeetham would be set up at the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysore with a grant of Rs.100 crores. All central universities in would have a separate Telugu Department. Besides, two international awards and national-level scholarships for students would be instituted. However, he said, many institutions are closing down Telugu Departments for want of students. Unless we launch a vigorous movement for promoting Telugu, the fears of UNESCO, which said that Telugu would join the list of dead languages going by the current trends, might come true,” he warned. He stressed there was need for immediate implementation of the GO that called for pursuing Telugu as a subject in all schools from class I to X. The GO making Telugu as a compulsory subject at school-level should be implemented besides introducing Telugu at Intermediate and degree level as a subject, he added.
