Gender advisory board set up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Gender Advisory Board has been set up with the Social Welfare Minister as chairperson and the gender adviser as convener with the objective of achieving the empowerment and development of women.

The secretaries of Social Welfare, LSG, Finance SC/ST Development, Planning, Health, Fisheries and Law, a member of the Planning Board and Women’s Commisison, DGP, E.D. of Kudumbasree Mission, Coir Development Director, M.D. of Cashew Development Corporation and the chairperson of the Women’s Development Corporation are among its members.

Non-official members

It will also have five non official members including two MLAs nominated by the government.

They are K.K. Shailaja and E.S. Bijimol, MLAs; T.N. Seema, Planning Board member Mridul Eapen and Women’s Commission member P.K. Sainaba.

Board’s responsibilities

The Board’s responsibilities include the ensuring of special consideration for women in the development programmes implemented by various departments and inclusion of special components which will benefit women in schemes of the LSG institutions and various departments and in State level programmes.

At least ten per cent of the outlay of the annual plan should be set apart for women’s schemes. The other functions of the Board include evaluation of programmes for the empowerment and development of women, coordinate them, give guidelines and conduct gender auditing.
