Man sets himself ablaze

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tension prevailed on Perambur Barracks Road in the city on Tuesday as a former employee of the Chennai Corporation committed suicide by self-immolation in broad daylight. Even as attempts were made to rescue him, the victim died on the spot.

Police said C. Palani (58) of Perambur was pursuing a case in the court to get back the job that he lost nine years ago.

On Tuesday, he came to a shop run by his son, Ashok Raja, in Sembium. After resting for a while in the workers’ room on the first floor, he came down with kerosene doused all over his body.

Even as Ashok Raja raised an alarm and tried to save his father, Palani set himself ablaze with a cigar lighter.

A few people tried to pour water and used blankets to put down the fire on the victim who ran on the road wailing. However, he succumbed to burns. The body was shifted to the Government Hospital for post-mortem.
