NHRC notice to DGP

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognisance of a newspaper report, highlighting the violation of the human rights of Dalits in Tirunelveli district.
The Commission has issued notice to the Collector and the Director General of Police, seeking their comments. The Commission issued the notice after taking suo motu cognisance of a report published in The Hindu on October 29, 2008, ‘Dalits leave village and stay at nearby hillock.’
The report pointed out that 200 Dalits of 70 families of Panthapuli had left their village for their safety, as they were allegedly under a serious threat from caste Hindus.
