Applications invited for various courses

SALEM: The Salem Government Industrial Training Institute for Women has invited applications from women for admission to courses offered under the Moudular Employable Skills programme.

The courses are Computer Fundamentals, MS Office and Internet, Basics for Printing Sector (Except book binding) and Basic electrical training. Persons who have passed Standard VIII are eligible.

A concession of 25 per cent will be given on fees to all candidates. Applications can be obtained free of cost from the institute.

Members of the Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam staged a demonstration here on Thursday demanding the government to provide compensation to weavers who had lost their jobs because of power cuts.

They said a large number of persons who were employed in the weaving sector were rendered jobless.

Adding to their woes, the prices of essential commodities skyrocketed.

Members also wanted the government to provide free house sites to weavers and housing loans up to Rs. 5 lakh.

It should initiate measures to provide Rs. 1,000 as Pongal bonus to all the workers in the unorganised sector.

There should not be any delay in distributing benefits through the welfare boards. Concrete measures should be implemented to ensure transparency in the functioning of the welfare boards, members said.

Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam handed over the appointment letter to 84 newly recruited at anganwadi centres.

The recruitment for these posts, the Minister said, was carried out based on the reservation procedures of the government.

The government, after lifting the ban on recruitment for the government departments, had provided employment to over 7,000 people in Salem district alone.
