NAMAKKAL: The construction of the bridge across the River Cauvery, near Mohanur, as a part of the Salem-Karur new railway line project, is likely to be completed by the end of 2010, Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu has said.

After inspecting the new railway line works on Thursday, the Minister said the bridge linking Mohanur in Namakkal district with Vangal in Karur district was a major work envisaged under the project.

The officials were asked to expedite the work.

Mr. Velu said the execution of the Salem Karur railway line project was progressing steadily despite the railways facing difficulties in a few areas. The estimate of project, which was sanctioned in 1996-97 for the formation of 85 kms of new broad gauge line between Salem and Karur, was revised upwards to Rs. 615 crore due to increase in prices of various materials. But fund was not a problem for the project, he added.

While inspecting the construction of a rail under bridge at Sivadapuram in Salem, the Minister told newspersons that the railways had spent about Rs. 35 crore for the project since April this fiscal.

To a question, Mr. Velu said that the Railways was ready to construct a new bridge at Bodinaickanpatti in Salem to provide safe passage to people in surrounding villages to access the city, if the Salem Corporation agreed to bear the expenses. “We will construct the bridge at a minimum cost,” the Minister said while dismissing the possibility of railways building the bridge with its funds.

Mr. Velu said Rs. 5.20 crore was sanctioned for the construction of Sivadapuram railway overbridge in Salem. The bridge would benefit people in seven villages. The railways had sanctioned 108 bridges to Tamil Nadu, he added.

The Minister also inspected the construction of buildings for Namakkal Railway Station.
