N.B. Jyoti has won several medals in a number of events
DETERMINED: Power lifter N. B. Jyoti. Chitradurga: Her rural background never acted as impediment to her dreams and achievements. Her sheer determination and strong family support has helped her carving a niche for herself in the field of power lifting. N.B. Jyoti (26), who won the title “Strong Woman of Karnataka” in the recently concluded Dasara Sports Meet in Mysore, is a native of Sirigere, a small village about 20 km from Chitradurga. Having clinched several medals in a number of events, Ms. Jyoti has been practising power lifting since the last eight years. Being an athlete since her schooldays, she was introduced to power lifting by a physical instructor while she was undergoing graduation in MBR College of Sirigere. After vigorous practise, for the first time she participated in the college-level power lifting championship held in Shimoga in 2001. “Incidentally, it was the first time that women’s power lifting competition was held in the university, in that I won gold medal in 48 kg category”, she said. The first gold medal of her life inspired and kept her spirits high that her winning trend seldom stopped. In successive years, she participated in inter-university, State-level and national level championships held in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Kerala, and won medals. So far, Ms. Jyoti has won seven medals in eight national-level competitions, eight medals in equal number of State level competitions, three medals in federation cup and one medal in Asia-level competition. Daughter of a farmer, Ms. Jyoti regrets that owing to financial constraints, she could not participate in the Asia-level competitions held in Uzbekistan and China in 2006 and 2007. “I could not muster Rs. 1.5 lakh which was required to visit and participate in the competition,” she says. Presently working as a police constable in Davangere district after getting job in sports quota, she is preparing for South-India championship to be held in Puducherry this month. Considering her achievements, the District Sports Department has recommended her name for prestigious Ekalavya award. According to her, about five persons are in race for the award, “Since I am the only one with the track record of winning in all the successive years, I earnestly hope that I will be considered for the award,” she says. Her coach Mazarullah Baig said that she is preparing well, and informed that a private mineral company MEL, has offered required sports gears to her for better preparation.
