Felicitation function soon

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Reiterating that the Government is committed to the overall development of Kannada, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said it will felicitate all those who struggled to get the Centre to declare Kannada a classical language.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Kannada news agency of the Hindustan Samachar here on Thursday.

Stating that objective coverage of cultural, social and political events would help in overall development, Mr. Yeddyurappa said the launch of the Kannada news agency would provide undistorted news and help the development of Kannada.

The Government would observe Kanaka Jayanti in a grand manner across the State on November 15, he said.

Scholar M. Chidananda Murthy urged the Government not to associate Bombay and Hyderabad with the two northern regions of the State.

It would better to refer to Bombay Karnataka as Belgaum Karnataka or Kittur Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka as Kalyana Karnataka. The Government should immediately bring in the required changes, he said.

Similarly, the Union Government should think of naming the country Bharat, instead of India.

Referring to the Centre’s decision to declare Kannada a classical language, Prof. Murthy said did it because of political compulsions following the “Chief Minister’s decision to observe dharna at Rajghat”.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Suryanarayana Rao said that a section of English newspapers had distorted the truth in their reportage of the conversion-related violence that took place in Orissa.

Minister for Information Katta Subramanya Naidu presided over the function.
