JACTO unions affiliated to TDP, CPI (M) expelled

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Barely two days after the teachers called off their 13-day-long strike, the TDP-affiliated Telugu Nadu Upadhyaya Sangham and CPI (M)-backed United Teachers’ Federation have been expelled from the Joint Action Committee of Teachers’ Organisations (JACTO).

Another teachers’ outfit, the Democratic Teachers’ Federation, has also been expelled by the executive committee of the JACTO which met here on Thursday. This follows the ‘displeasure’ openly expressed by the three unions over the calling off of the strike without securing concrete assurances on their charter of demands.

‘Information leaked’

Announcing the decision, JACTO representatives Sheik Jilani and others alleged that the three unions were behaving unilaterally and provoking other unions to oppose the decisions taken by the majority unions. While they were expected to coordinate with other unions in taking forward the cause of the teachers, the representatives of the three unions “leaked internal information which was aimed at lowering the image of the other unions”.

The representatives who called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday evening urged him to release orders pertaining to the accepted demands expeditiously. They said the majority unions were hopeful that the government would demonstrate its commitment to solve their grievances.

Though the JACTO called off its strike following the positive response from the government and directive from the High Court, it would continue to mount pressure for considering demands like compassionate appointments, medical reimbursement to aided teachers and recognition of special Vidya volunteers as apprentice teachers.
