A cool head wins the day for NPS

The team aces the regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz ’08

BANGALORE: The team from National Public School (NPS), Koramangala, held its nerve till the end to win the regional finals of ‘The Hindu Young World Quiz ’08’, held at Chowdiah Memorial Hall here on Thursday.

At the end of the penultimate round, the NPS team, comprising Rooshil Shah and S. Madhusudan, tied with the Delhi Public School (Bangalore North), comprising Tharun Thamban and Vidur Niranjan. Both teams had scored 50 points. But the NPS team gave correct answers to three questions in the last “shootout” round and garnered 15 points to emerge on top. “We are thrilled but it is yet to sink in. The entire school will be happy when they come to know that we have won the quiz,” said Rooshil.

Madhusudan said that the preparation for the regional finals was “normal” but now that they had reached the all-India final, “we will put in an effort to gather information from various media on a wide range of topics”. Both Rooshil and Madhusudan received a cash prize of Rs. 4,000 each. They were also given trophies from The Hindu and a host of goodies from the sponsors. They qualify to represent Bangalore at the grand all-India final in Visakhapatnam on November 13.

The DPS team became richer by Rs. 6,000 and also received trophies and gift hampers.

In all, 342 teams from 125 schools participated in the ninth edition of the competition. Six teams qualified for the regional final on stage. The team comprising Naren M. Nath and Karansinha Patil from Innisfree House School came third.

The team from Carmel School, Padmanabhanagar stood fourth, while Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Jalahalli, won the fifth place. The team from Mirambika School for New Age (MSFNA), JP Nagar, finished sixth.

Actor Ramya gave away the prizes to the winners. She said that the competition reminded her of her school days. MPV School from Mysore and Maruthi Vidya Kendra (CBSE), Tumkur, received the Best Outstation Team prizes. The best team name prize was given to “Young World Invaders” from Max Muller Public School. The team from MSFNA was the Snakes and Ladders winner, while the DPS (North) emerged as the Amaze winner.

This year’s title sponsor was Extramarks.com. The associate sponsors were: Pepsico (Cheetos), DC Mango, Kissan (Amaze Brain Food) and Vizag Steel. Lotte (Caramilk), Encyclopaedia Britannica, Firefox Bikes, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Penguin Books, GM Pens (Reynolds), and State Bank of Travancore are the national sponsors, while Dabur (Real) fruit juice is the official beverage. The regional sponsors were: GRS Fantasy Park, Mysore and Lunar Bags, Mysore, British Library, Crossword, Eco Crystal and Ruffles Fashion Wear. The event was managed by Quizwalahs, while quizmaster V.V. Ramanan hosted the show.
