Five held on the charge of theft

KOCHI: Ernakulam Town North Police arrested five persons wanted in many robbery and vehicle theft cases.

Those arrested were Harris, 21, Chitteparambil Veedu, Freedom Road, Karukappally, Kaloor; Lijesh, 21, and his brother Lijo, also known as Joseph, 24, Ponampally Veedu, Thuthiyoor, Vazhakala, Kakkanad; Shibu, 30, Kallumpurath Veedu, near Parapuram Mosque, Mannam, Paravoor; and Manu, also known as Mahesh, 24, Thaliyanzhath, Chunangamveli, Aluva.

A special squad led by P.M. Varghese, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ernakulam, and D.S. Suneesh Babu, Circle Inspector, Ernakulam Town North, as instructed T. Vikram, Deputy City Police Commissioner, was formed to track the accused. This came on the basis of a tip-off received by Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

The crime squad challenged the group that had assembled near Anchumana Temple on Wednesday night, following which they fled. The squad members comprising constables Babu, Salim, Vinayakan, Jacob Mani and Anil gave the suspects a chase and overpowered them.

Harris was wanted in nearly 13 cases. This included robbing mobile phone and driving licence from a motorcyclist at Kuttampuzha on December 23, 2007 and assaulting two more on the same day, one at Kothamangalam and robbing Rs.4,500, mobile phone and his house’s key and another at Kuruppampadi near Perumbavoor.

The police also wanted him in connection with the assault on Prasanth, the cashier of a petrol bunk at Thayikkattukara, Aluva on February 16, 2008 and robbing 19,650 from the bag.

Harris has case registered against him for stopping motorcyclist at Kuzhalmandam, Palakkad on September 19, 2008 and robbing him of Rs. 1000.

Case was also registered against Shibu, Harris and Lijesh for stealing a motorbike from near Hotel Renaissance on October 7, 2008 and robbing a motorcyclist at Kalamassery of gold chain, mobile phone and his wallet. The group later stopped Ittichan, who was driving his Innova, near Century Club, Vennala and robbed his gold chain and wallet.

The accused were produced before Judicial First Class Magistrate-I and remanded.
