Power shortage will not hit growth: Veeraswami

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is facing power shortage only this year, whereas neighbouring States have been facing the crisis for many years, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami said on Thursday.

Delivering the inaugural address at the two-day seminar of Auto SCM India 2008, organised here by the CII Institute of Logistics, he said: “In other States, political parties and the press do not politicise this problem. But, in Tamil Nadu, some opposition parties and some newspapers, along with certain television channels, are making it a big issue with vested interests.”

Several steps were being taken by the government to meet the shortage of 1,178 MW.

The problem was only temporary and would not affect the industrial growth, said Mr. Veeraswami, whose speech was read out by S. Kathiresan, Member (Accounts), Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

Quoting the Central Electricity Authority report of September 2008, Mr. Veeraswami said Maharashtra faced a shortage of 5,200 MW, followed by Rajasthan 800, Andhra Pradesh 964, Karnataka 1,200, Kerala 364, Punjab 1,500 and Gujarat 1,570.
