NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet’s Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday approved the launching of a new scheme for government-industry partnership for promoting research and development in futuristic areas of biotechnology, apart from product development for public good. The scheme, for which Rs. 350 crore has been earmarked for the 11th plan period, will mainly focus on major national unmet technologies in agriculture, human health, animal productivity, and energy and environment and aim at increasing the global competitiveness of Indian industry in new and futuristic technologies. The scheme will provide for a government contribution of 30 to 50 per cent to the industry for discovery-linked innovation. Bio-diversity planThe Union Cabinet also met on Thursday and gave its approval for a national biodiversity action plan, which aimed at strengthening and integration of in situ, on farm and ex-situ conservation, augmentation of natural resource base and its sustainable utilisation, regulation of the introduction of invasive alien species and their management and assessment of vulnerability and adaption to climate change and desertification.
Chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Cabinet approved revision of the cost estimate for construction of the combined project of Afghanistan’s Parliament Building and Indian Chancery complex in Kabul to Rs. 950 crore. It also gave its nod for signing and ratification of an agreement on transfer of sentenced persons between India and Hong Kong.
