Gibbs dropped from ODI squad

Johannesburg: Herschelle Gibbs continues to hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons and the South African opener was on Thursday dropped from the One-Day International cricket squad after breaking a team curfew.

Gibbs was sent home after the right-hander broke a team curfew on the evening before Wednesday’s Standard Bank Pro20 International against Bangladesh.

Accordingly, Gibbs would not be part of the South African squad which takes on Bangladesh in the three-match MTN ODI series starting at Potchefstroom’s Senwes Park on Friday.

“Herschelle’s behaviour is unacceptable in the context of team discipline,” coach Mickey Arthur said in a statement.

The selectors didn’t name any replacement for Gibbs and Justin Ontong is likely to walk out to open the innings with Hashim Amla.

Team manager Mohammed Moosajee said Gibbs would attend an alcohol rehabilitation course.

“We are not trying to punish Herschelle but rather to help him,” said Moosajee. — PTI
