dated November 8, 1958: Military dictatorship

Prime Minister Nehru, addressing his periodical press conference in New Delhi on November 7, commented sharply that “no-where in the wide world to-day is there such naked military dictatorship as in Pakistan and there is nothing veiled about it.” Mr. Nehru, urging the need for India to be wide awake, pointed out that “such dictatorship always has inherent in it certain risks and dangers of individuals acting on moods.” He apparently felt provoked by the general’s statement and by certain comments of individuals and newspapers in Britain and the U.S. General Ayub Khan had told pressmen that Pakistan would certainly not hesitate to go to war with India if necessary to settle the Kashmir and canal waters dispute.
