Diabetology course gets recognition from MCI

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted recognition with retrospective effect to the post graduate diploma course in diabetology offered by the Madras Medical College.

The Department of Diabetology, set up in the year 1977, started the course in 1986.

Addressing reporters here on Thursday, A. Panneerselvam, secretary, Madras Medical College Diabetologist Alumni Association, said though the course was started after obtaining permission from the MCI and the State government, its recognition was not renewed when all medical courses were transferred to Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University from Madras University.

Association president N.Rajendiran said that to commemorate the recognition, a function would be organised in Puducherry on Saturday. Tamil Nadu Health Minister M.R.K.Paneerselvam would participate.

He also said that to tackle the growing number of diabetes patients, the association had urged medical colleges to start diabetology departments and post graduate diploma courses with due recognition.

Prevalence

Dr. Rajendiran said according to World Health Organisation estimates, prevalence of diabetes in India was likely to increase to 57.2 million in 2025.
