BJP, LSP welcome GHMC poll move

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad BJP unit has welcomed the Government’s reported move to hold elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and exuded confidence that it would bag maximum number of seats.

At a press conference here on Friday, Greater Hyderabad BJP president Ch. Ramachandra Reddy challenged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to immediately order the GHMC polls. He suspected that Dr. Reddy spoke of the elections to be held in January only to check the disinterestedness among his party cadres.

‘Poor civic conditions’

He said voters in 150 GHMC divisions were vexed with the deteriorating civic conditions and the indiscriminate sale of government lands. People were resenting the extremely bad condition of roads and the pathetic state of storm water drains and the worsening law and order situation in the State capital, he said.

He accused Dr. Reddy of misleading people on his promise of round-the-clock supply of water pointing out that the third phase of Krishna water scheme had never seen the light of the day.

Similarly, the government which hiked the unit rate of a house under Rajiv Swagruha scheme, was not reducing it when the steel and cement prices had nosedived, he said.

Scooter rallies

The BJP was planning scooter rallies on Saturday and Sunday from different areas to mobilise people for the meeting to be addressed by the party national president L.K. Advani in the city.

Party city general secretaries B. Venkat Reddy and M. Bala Lingam were also present.

Lok Satta Party meet

Meanwhile, the Lok Satta Party (LSP) too on Friday welcomed the Chief Minister announcementand said in absence of elected representatives, people had to depend totally on officials for resolution of even minor problems.

Party president Jayaprakash Narayan reviewed the preparedness of the party for the elections at a meeting of city unit leaders and said good performance in the GHMC elections was critical for the party in spreading its new political culture all over the State. Party Greater Hyderabad Unit president N. Ravinder said it was prepared to contest in 100 divisions as of now and added that there was good response to their programme ‘one day in a basti’.

The party is committed to creation of elected divisional-level committees and sanction of guaranteed fund of Rs.2 crore every year for each division. In a statement the party said it also decided to launch a programme to collect donations to face other parties getting ready to spend huge amounts. “The party would draw people’s attention to the fact that American citizens contributed 5 to 10 dollars each and became partners in Barack Obama’s march to victory in the presidential election,” the statement added.
