GREAT FEAT: N. Ramachandran (right), President, World Squash Federation, is felicitated by S.K.A. Manickavasagam, President, MCC. CHENNAI: In a gesture that conveyed a sense of pride, the MCC felicitated its senior member N. Ramachandran on his taking over as the President of the World Squash Federation. Members praised Mr. Ramachandran on the distinction and wished him to rise further in the field of sports administration. The Club President S.K.A. Manickavasagam said “Mr. Ramachandran had put Indian squash on the international map.” Past Presidents, Lakshman Swaroop described him as a “versatile person”, who had also encouraged other sportspersons (swimmers and triathletes) form the underprivileged class and helped them get jobs while K.R. Ganapathy said, “Mr. Ramachandran had done a yeoman service for sports in general and squash in particular.” Dr. Salim Thomas, said “Mr. Ramachandran was known for his efficiency, planning and execution. Current and future players will owe much to him for all he had done.” Close friend and rival on the court, Dr. Ravi Santhosham compared his achievement to his having “attained world championship at the administrative level. Mr. Ramachandran will surely get squash into Olympics,” he said. State Transport Secretary D.N. Sarangi said Mr. Ramachandran had “improved squash stage by stage and we now have champions from here.” Nirmal Shekar, Sports Editor, The Hindu said it was a “fantastic achievement. His sense of commitment was unparalleled in sports administration in India.” Mr. Ramachandran was later presented with a plaque that also carried a citation. Thanking all, he described the honour as something special became, as he put it “it was here in this club that squash for me began.”
