BHUBANESWAR: Like the Carnatic and the Hindustani style of music, Odissi has all the ingredients to be regarded as a distinct music tradition and can claim a classical status at par with the two other traditions. This was the unanimous opinion of the scholars and musicologists who attended the two-day Tridhara classical music conference that concluded in the city on Friday. Being hosted by the city-based Swar-Rang cultural organisation founded by noted vocalist and guru Damodar Hota, pioneer of the Udra Paddhatiya Sangeet (the ancient music tradition of the Orissa), the annual festival was launched last year to bring the three distinct music styles on a platform to prove Odissi’s unique features - its similarities and differences – with the two other styles, explained Hota, the man behind the mission. It has been aptly named as ‘tridhara’, he added. Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata collaborated in mounting the event that was held at the Rabindra Mandap. While Hota represented the Odissi style, Vijaywada-based noted vocalist, critic and scholar P.Surya Rao and Benaras-based versatile vocalist Chitta Ranjan Jyotishi represented the Carnatic and Hindustani styles. The trio performed during both the evenings; each presenting a different raga. Conducted by Pranati Behera, the young students of the host organisation recited Geeta Govinda and Shiva Vandana on both the evenings before the recitals by the stalwarts commenced. Former Orissa Sahitya Akademi Secretary Raj Kishore Das, former superintendent of Orissa State Museum Harischandra Dash and Adyasha Satpathy, Chief Executive of the Oriya daily The Dharitri, inaugurated the event.
