Thrissur: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said the Centre and State governments should take urgent steps to prevent domestic retail giants from harming small and medium traders. He was addressing a public meeting held here on Saturday evening as part of the seventh State conference of the Kerala State Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithy. “Domestic retail giants harm small and medium traders as much as foreign multinationals do. Glitzy supermarkets that remind of unaided schools attract Malayalis. As regards prices, even wholesale merchants cannot compete with retail giants.” He said the effects of the global financial crisis were increasingly being felt in Kerala. “Many export products, including rubber, spices and handloom, have felt the impact,” he said. Mayor R. Bindu, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, Public Works Minister Mons Joseph, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran, Therambil Ramakrishnan, Kadanappally Ramachandran, MLAs, CPI(M) Central committee member E.P. Jayarajan, cine actor Kalabhavan Mani, Kerala State Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithy president Binny Emmatty and secretary A.T. Abudlla Koya were present on the occasion.
