Fisherman injured in firing

NAGAPATTINAM: A fisherman of Akkaraipettai village near here was injured on Friday, when a crew on a boat, allegedly belonging to the Sri Lankan Navy, opened fire.

Babu (30), along with fiver others, had ventured into the sea from the village off Kodikkarai. Near the Sethusamudram project area, three boats surrounded their vessel and one of them opened fire.

Although no one was hit by any bullet directly, Babu suffered shrapnel injuries near his knee and was admitted to the general hospital here.

After an X-ray, doctors referred him to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for surgery to remove “minute foreign particles” that might be lodged in the knee, Assistant Director (Fisheries) P. Umakanthan said. The medical college hospital doctors did not find any particles in the X-ray, he said.
