Take up Bench issue before session: MP

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, has said that it is unnecessary to wait till the Parliament session in December to discuss the issue of setting up a High Court Bench in the capital city.

He was speaking to the members of the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association who are on an indefinite Satyagraha in front of the Vanchiyoor court complex, demanding the setting up of the Bench.

The advice from Defence Minister A.K. Antony to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar and other leaders of the Bar association to wait till the beginning of the Parliament session does not bode well, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

A positive response from the part of the Union Minister for Law during the session alone will not help in resolving the issue, he said. The strategy of the Union government should be to exert pressure on the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and to win his confidence. The consent of the Chief Justice is deemed necessary in setting up the Bench.

C.K. Sitaram, president, Bar association, warned of intensifying the agitation in case of any further delay in allotting the Bench.
