KATHMANDU: The U.N. Security Council has urged Nepal’s government and the political parties to “work together in a spirit of compromise” take the peace process forward. Ambassador Jorge Urbina of Costa Rica has said the U.N. Security Council has urged the government to take the necessary steps if the term of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) has to be extended. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Nepal’s Prime Minister Prachanda recently and asked the latter for a formal request if the government wanted an extended term for UNMIN till January 2009. Meanwhile, a report released by the Security Council said UNMIN chief Ian Martin, who is also Mr. Ban’s special representative, on Friday, told the council that UNMIN might need an extension.
