Uthra stops Soumya’s winning run

TADEPALLIGUDEM: Tamil Nadu’s P. Uthra stopped top seed and Women’s International Master Soumya Swaminathan’s winning spree by holding her to a draw in the eighth game of the 38th National junior and the 23rd National girls’ chess championship at the Sasi Institute of Engineering and Technology here on Saturday.

Soumya, playing white with Sicilian Kann, agreed for a truce on the 31st move in a game which drifted into a rook verses bishop ending. Uthra took Soumya by surprise with her counterattack.

Soumya, despite her drawn encounter, continues to lead the girls section with 7.5 points. Orissa’ Padmini Rout and P. Uthra are in the joint second with six points.

The Karthikeyan vs. T. Abhay tie ended in a draw on the 42nd move. Adhiban with a Ruy Lopez Exchange variation defeated Orissa’s Anvesh Upadhyaya in 39 moves.

IM Karthikeyan is still in the lead with 6.5 points, closely followed by Tamil Nadu’s T. Abhay, B. Adhiban, Navin Kanna, V.A.V. Rajesh (TN), AP’s M.R. Lalith Babu and Maharashtra’s Swapnil Dhopade with six points.
