Residents demand new railway station at Maharaja Nagar

Staff Reporter

In view of rapidly expanding eastern parts of Palayamkottai

TIRUNELVELI: Considering the rapidly expanding eastern parts of Palayamkottai, the Railway Ministry and Railway Board should sanction a new railway station at Maharaja Nagar, residents’ welfare associations have said.

It was pointed out at a meeting of the associations held here on Saturday that areas surrounding Maharaja Nagar were expanding rapidly, owing to the formation of more than 20 new residential areas, including Thiyagaraja Nagar, Ponmani Colony, Venkateshwara Nagar, State Bank of India Officers’ Colony, Vasantham Colony, TVS Nagar, Thirumal Nagar, TNEB Colony, Mallika Colony, Sai Baba Colony, Kalyani Nagar, Kokila Nagar, IOB Colony, Rajagopalapuram, Srinivasa Nagar, KTC Nagar, Darling Nagar, V.M. Chathram, Sivanthipatti, Keezhanaththam, Ariyakulam, where over one lakh reside.

No response

After their plea to the ministers and officials concerned failed to evoke any positive response, residents of this area sent over 1,000 postcards to the Ministry, which turned out to be a vain attempt. Though Maharaja Nagar is served by government and private buses 300 times a day, a railway station is necessary. The Railway Ministry can use a spacious vacant land, belonging to the Tirunelveli Corporation, for the establishment of a railway station, speakers at the meeting suggested.

Tirunelveli MP R. Dhanushkodi Adityan said that he was prepared to take the representatives of residents’ welfare associations to New Delhi for a meeting with the Union Railway Minister.

Popular Muthiah of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam; Palayamkottai zone chairman Suba. Seetharaman of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam; Venugopal of Communist Party of India; V. Palani of Communist Party of India (Marxist); Gopal Das of Marumalarchi Draivda Munnetra Kazhagam and corporation councillors ‘Baby’ Gopal, Kumar and Thiyagarajan participated in the meeting.
