LTTE focusing on the east, says Sri Lanka

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Air Force claimed on Sunday that it bombed two LTTE positions in Kilinochchi. Spokesperson Janaka Nanayakkara said jets launched simultaneous airstrikes targeting a Sea Tiger command centre west of Paranthan Junction and an LTTE artillery gun position southeast of Pooneryn.

Also, the Navy claimed to have recovered an arms cache from Kumburupiddi, north of Trincomalee, on Saturday. The recovery of the weapons comes amid reports of increased LTTE presence in the east. The military had cleared the east in 2007 and in May this year, elections were held to the Eastern Provincial Council. The military said the weapons had been brought to sabotage activities in the Eastern Province.

LTTE political chief B. Nadesan has told TamilNet, following reports of Tamil Nadu leaders seeking clarification on LTTE’s stand on a ceasefire, that: “There is no hesitation on our side to reiterate our position that we have always wanted a ceasefire.”

“It is Sri Lanka that unilaterally abrogated the ceasefire, Mr. Nadesan said. He added the Tigers were only fighting a defensive war since Colombo thrust upon [the] Tamils an aggressive war. Mr. Nadesan said they have always reiterated they have been committed to the ceasefire,” reported the website.
