Rs. 153-cr. project for Tirunallar

Shyam Ranganathan

KARAIKAL: A comprehensive project to develop Tirunallar into a temple town will be taken up at a cost of Rs. 153 crore through a Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) loan.

The Darbharanyeshwarar temple in Tirunallar, considered the most important shrine of Lord Saneeshwara, attracts an estimated 60,000 pilgrims each Saturday. And, on Sanipeyarchi, every two-and-a-half years, 17 lakh pilgrims visit the town over a 40-day period.

Although the population of the town is less, the huge floating population provides both a challenge and an opportunity to develop the town as an important and modern pilgrim spot.

HUDCO has come forward with the loan to “provide economic growth through urban development supported with infrastructure facilities and tourism involving the temple and the community.”

“We will provide modern housing complexes to the people preparing the way for holistic development of the entire town,” Collector N. Vasanthakumar said.
