NREGP aids tribal housing

Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) has come to the aid of a housing scheme for primitive tribal people in the Parambikulam forests which was held up for a long time owing to paucity of fund.

The tribal housing scheme had been facing financial problems because the funds allotted for the houses were inadequate to cover the additional cost in taking the construction materials to the remote tribal hamlets in the Parambikulam Wild Life Sanctuary area.

This was until District Collector K.S. Sreenivas took the initiative to get Rs.10,000 for each house from the NREGP fund in addition to the Rs.90,000 allotted for the housing scheme by the Central government.

With the assistance from the NREGP, 27 houses have already been completed and another ten houses have been taken up for construction.

These houses were constructed at Earth Dam, Kuriyarkutty and Parambikulam Kadar Colony, district tribal development officer K. Vijayan said.

The implementation of the housing scheme has been entrusted with the Divisional Forest Officer of Parambikulam as the construction has to be done in the deep forest. Ten more houses would be constructed in the Thekkadi area of Nemmara Forest Division for the primitive tribes, Mr. Vijayan said.
