Vizhinjam: DCC opposes land acquisition

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The District Congress Committee (DCC) has called upon the government to withdraw the notification on acquiring land for the Vizhinjam seaport project.

A meeting of DCC leaders held here on Monday expressed concern over the government’s refusal to back down in the face of stiff protest from thousands of residents in the six panchayats identified for acquisition. The meeting pointed out that the previous UDF government had proposed the reclamation of 400 acres from the sea and the acquisition of minimum land for road and rail connectivity. It demanded that this proposal be implemented to avoid mass displacement of families.

The meeting protested the assault on Nagaroor panchayat president A. Ibrahimkutty, allegedly by CPI(M) workers. Speakers warned the government that the DCC would be forced to launch an agitation if the assailants were not booked. They also expressed concern over the attacks on Congress workers in the district.

The meeting decided to mobilise ward, mandalam and block committee workers for the celebrations to mark the birth anniversary of Jawharlal Nehru on November 14 and Indira Gandhi on the 19th. November 14 will also be observed as Flag Day preceding the State conference of the party scheduled to be held in Kochi in December.

The meeting mourned the demise of former legislator B. Vijayakumar. DCC president V.S. Sivakumar presided over the meeting. KPCC executive committee member N. Azhakesan, DCC office-bearers and block presidents participated.
