Minorities’ welfare: Rs. 55 lakh loan target fixed

KRISHNAGIRI: A sum of Rs. 55 lakh has been fixed as target for disbursing loans to the minorities in Krishnagiri district for the financial year 2008-09, according to the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Minorities Development Corporation Limited., Fr Xavier Arulraj.

Fr Arulraj was here on Monday to hold consultations with the district officials regarding loan disbursement.

On the sidelines of the consultative committee meeting, Fr Arulraj told reporters that the Commission was ready to extend the loan disbursal target up to Rs. 1 crore, if sufficient applications were received from the district. He also advised the officials to sensitise the minorities to come forward to avail loan on low interest from the Commission.

Applications

He said so far only 250 applications were received from Krishnagiri district for educational loan, whereas from Cuddalore district, the Commission received 30,000 applications for education loan. Officers in the Minorities’ Welfare Department were asked to initiate measures to reach out to the poor and help them to come up in life.

The Commission has, so far, disbursed Rs. 4.5 crore as educational assistance.

Apart from that, the Commission was also lending term loan, micro finance, auto loan and education loan on less interest.

For individual loans, a group with 60 per cent minorities can avail loan of Rs. 25,000 per individual on 6 per cent interest, Fr Arulraj said. The meeting was chaired by Fr Arulraj. Collector V.K. Shanmugam, who is the head of the committee and its members including Joint Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Dharmapuri, S. Jaisingh Selvaraj, Project Officer (DRDA), C.K. Veeranan, and District Backward Class Development Officer M.L. Chinnasamy attended the meeting.
