Already signed an agreement with Ethiopia to streamline public sanitation facilities there NEW DELHI: Voluntary organisation Sulabh International is now all set to share its expertise in sanitation, health care and hygiene with five countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Caribbean region. The NGO has already signed an agreement with Ethiopia to streamline public sanitation facilities in that country and is planning to engage with other African nations too. According to the founder of Sulabh International, Bindeshwar Pathak: “The work would be started soon in Ethiopia and plans are being finalised for Angola, Madagascar, Tajikistan and Haiti to streamline sanitation facilities in these countries. We have already signed a pact with the Oromia National Regional State of Ethiopia, while projects in other nations are also being worked out.” Mr. Pathak said Sulabh International would provide consultancy services to each of the five countries to help them adapt their technologies for on-site sanitation including twin-pit, pour-flush, compost toilet, public toilets connected to bio-gas digesters for energy production and effluent treatment technology for purification of waste water. Disclosing that under the aegis of UN-Habitat, Sulabh International had trained professionals from 15 African countries so that they could replicate the know-how in their countries, Mr. Pathak said they have already constructed five public toilets linked to bio-gas digesters in Kabul funded by India. Recently the United Nations included Sulabh International as one of the world’s 50 most successful business models targeting betterment of the poor.
