The Nobel Peace Prize for 1953 has been awarded to the Belgian Dominican Father Georges Pire, it was announced in Oslo on November 10. In 1938, he founded two charity institutions which laid the basis for his refugee work. In September 1950, he founded the first home for refugees in the world at Huy, followed by three more at Esneux, Aertselaer near Antwerp, and Braine-Le-Comte. In 1956, he began the creation of the “European Villages” which have brought him world-wide support.
