The fabulous Hope diamond, the largest of its kind in the world and linked with the misfortune suffered by various owners during three centuries, has been given away to form the nucleus of a potential American “rival” to Britain’s Crown jewels. A New York gem dealer, Harry Winston, has presented the giant stone to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington as a free gift.
