‘A genuine team effort’

Chennai: Chairman of the national selection panel, Krishnamachari Srikkanth attributed India’s 2-0 triumph in the four-Test Border-Gasvaskar series to “a genuine team effort.”

“This was a series where each one of the cricketers pulled his weight, the seniors and the younger bunch,” said Srikkanth on Monday.

He was all praise for skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “He (Dhoni) has his own style of captaincy. Dhoni reads the game well.”

Srikkanth was pleased that India won the series on pitches favouring batsmen. “We won fair and square. We played better cricket.”

Deserving send-off

The former India captain acknowledged Sourav Ganguly’s contribution in the series victory. “His experience proved invaluable. Both his big innings in the series, in Mohali and Nagpur, proved match-winning efforts. He has been a terrific captain and a left-handed batsman for India. Ganguly was rightly given a great send-off by his team-mates.”

Turning his attention to bowlers, Srikkanth said pacemen Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma bowled with exemplary control right through the series. Spinners Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra, he believed, complemented each other well.

Srikkanth was confident that India would triumph in the ODI and the Test series against England. “We have the momentum and the talent. But England is a good side and we should not underestimate it.” — Special Correspondent
